It is common that a third-country foreigner will move to Slovakia also with his/her family and that they apply for residence permits together. Usually, one family member is the so-called guarantor bearing, from legal point of view, responsibility for the financial coverage of costs and expenses of other family members.

A temporary residence permit for the purposes of a family reunion is granted in connection with a residence permit granted to the guarantor.

A special form in the Slovak language shall be filled in and submitted personally by the applicant applying for a residence permit for the purpose of family reunion, with the below documents to be attached therein:

  • A valid passport
  • Two colour photographs (3 x 3.5 cm in size)
  • Certificates issued by a Registry Office (Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate of a child)
  • An affidavit of the legal representative of a child that he/she is single
  • A photocopy of the residence permit documents of the parents of the child
  • A criminal record extract from the foreigner´s home country as well as from countries where he/she stayed longer than 90 days in 6 successive months in the last 3 years
  • Accommodation in Slovakia, e.g.
    • An affidavit declaring that the foreigner owns property in Slovakia, or
    • A notarised rent contract proving the foreigner has rented property, including the respective title deed
    • A notarised affidavit from the property owner that he/she will provide accommodation to the foreigner, including the respective title deed
    • A statement from an accommodation facility (hotel, lodging house) confirming that accommodation will be provided to the foreigner there
  • Document proving the foreigner has sufficient funds to cover his/her stay: an affidavit of the guarantor that he/she will provide financial and material coverage during his/her stay in Slovakia and any of the following documents
    • An employment contract
    • A statement issued by the employer confirming the amount of salary
    • A bank account statement opened in the name of the third-country foreigner

A residence permit application  the purpose of family reunion may be submitted together with the guarantor´s residence permit application for the purpose of employment/business. It may also be submitted later after the guarantor was granted a residence permit.
