If you have Slovak roots, you may be eligible to obtain Slovak citizenship by descent. At MADEJ & PARTNERS, we guide individuals from around the world through the process of reclaiming their Slovak heritage.

Who Qualifies

Individuals may acquire Slovak citizenship under the following conditions:

  • At least one parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent was a Czechoslovak citizen born in the territory of the Slovak Republic.
  • The ancestor lost Czechoslovak citizenship due to emigration or political reasons before 1993.
  • Supporting documents confirming Slovak ancestry and personal connection must be available.

Recent amendments to Slovak citizenship laws have made it easier for descendants of Slovak emigrants to reclaim citizenship, even if they were born abroad or have never lived in Slovakia.

The condition for applying for citizenship by descent is in parallel to the granting of a residence permit in the territory of the Slovak Republic. The application for a residence permit can be submitted simultaneously with an application for citizenship by descent.

You can submit your application for Slovak citizenship by descent at one of the following locations:

  • At a Slovak Embassy or Consulate abroad in the country where you reside.
