A citizen of the European Union is entitled, without any further conditions, to stay in the territory of the Slovak Republic for three months from the date of entry into the territory of the Slovak Republic.

A citizen of the European Union who resides in the territory of the Slovak Republic for longer than three months is obliged to apply for registration of residence in the Slovak Republic.

An EU citizen acquires the right of residence in the Slovak Republic for a period longer than three months if:

  1. they are employed in the territory of the Slovak Republic,
  2. they are self-employed in the territory of the Slovak Republic,

  4. they study at a primary school, secondary school, or university in the Slovak Republic,
  5. it is expected that they will be employed, or

The application for registration of residence must be submitted on the official form in person at the competent department of the Foreign Police or through the electronic service established for this purpose, within 30 days after the expiry of three months from the date of entry into the territory of the Slovak Republic.

An EU citizen applying for registration of residence in the Slovak Republic is obliged to present, together with the application, a valid identity card or a valid travel document and a document proving one of the facts mentioned above:

  • a written promise of employment or a certificate of employment; or
  • a trade licence; or

It is also recommended to submit a document confirming the provision of accommodation in the Slovak Republic. Otherwise, the police department will indicate as the residence address only the municipality in which the EU citizen will stay (without specifying the exact address).

An EU citizen whose right of residence has been registered by the police department may apply to the police department for the issuance of a residence document called a “Residence Card of an EU Citizen” valid for five years.
