Slovak citizenship by descent allows eligible individuals to acquire Slovak citizenship based on their family origin. This legal pathway is available to descendants of former Czechoslovak or Slovak citizens, regardless of where they currently live.

MADEJ & PARTNERS is among the leading Slovak law firms representing clients in Slovak citizenship by descent proceedings, providing comprehensive legal assistance to clients worldwide throughout the entire process.

Who May Be Eligible

You may qualify for Slovak citizenship by descent if:

  • one of your parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents, and

  • was born on the territory of present-day Slovakia, and

  • held Czechoslovak or Slovak citizenship; and

  • supporting documents confirming Slovak ancestry and personal connection must be available.

Each case is assessed individually, based on the family line, legal continuity and relevant historical circumstances.

Initial Eligibility Review

As a first step, we will review the documents and family line information on which your potential eligibility for Slovak citizenship by descent is based. This initial review is provided free of charge. Based on this assessment, we will advise you whether the documents you already have are sufficient to proceed, or whether additional genealogical research in Slovakia may be required.

Our Legal Services Include

MADEJ & PARTNERS provides comprehensive assistance, including the preparation of all required applications and declarations on the client’s behalf, communicates directly with the Slovak Embassy regarding appointment scheduling and the submission of applications, and obtain official documents from Slovak authorities as needed.

Some documents from Slovakia will be obtained by our law firm, such as Slovak birth certificates for ancestors born in Slovakia, genealogical documents, and genealogical reports. Other documents are to be provided by the client, such as an extract from the relevant criminal records register (e.g. an FBI background check) and birth certificates of the applicant’s ancestors issued in the applicant’s country of origin. For all documents the client provides, we will arrange certified Slovak translations by official translators registered with the Slovak Ministry of Justice, in full compliance with Slovak law.

We will compile and organize all documentation, prepare the required number of officially notarized copies, and send the complete and neatly arranged applications for all applicants to the client by DHL, ready for submission, well in advance of the scheduled appointment date.

Our legal services therefore include, inter alia:

  • Initial Eligibility Review

  • Coordination of genealogical research in cooperation with a reputable professional genealogist, including obtaining official documents from state, public, and other archives

  • Assistance in obtaining official Slovak registry documents, including birth, marriage, and citizenship records

  • Preparation and submission of all required applications, declarations, and supporting documents

  • Arrangement of the required number of officially certified copies and certified Slovak translations performed by official translators registered with the Slovak Ministry of Justice

  • Communication with Slovak authorities on the client’s behalf

  • Legal representation throughout the entire process, with the law firm acting as the client’s legal representative and primary point of contact for state authorities, significantly reducing the administrative burden on the client.

How the Application Works

Applications for Slovak citizenship by descent may be submitted:

  • at a Slovak embassy or consulate abroad, or
  • in Slovakia with the competent authority.

Personal attendance at the time of submission is required. We will guide you in choosing the most appropriate venue for submission based on your location and individual circumstances.

Citizenship for Children

Children of eligible applicants may also obtain Slovak citizenship by descent. As with all applications, eligibility must be derived from an ancestor who is no more distant than a great-grandparent, meaning the applicant — including a child — must be no more than a fourth-generation descendant of the qualifying ancestor, who is counted as the first generation for this purpose.

From a procedural perspective, a child under 14 years of age may be included in the parent’s application. Children aged 14 and older must submit a separate application, which they personally sign, with the consent of their parents or legal guardians.
